L2 ENGINEERING air tools

Complete a blog post on air tools .

Rough outline

1.What are Pneumatic tools / air compressors? Diagram examples of compressors and an explanation. Show a range of different air compressors you might come across.

A pneumatic tool is one that's driven with the assistance of compressed air rather than electricity.

Reciprocating compressor or piston compressor is a positive-displacement compressor that uses pistons driven by a crankshaft to deliver gases at high pressure.

Rotary screw

is a type of gas compressor, such as an air compressor, that uses a rotary-type positive-displacement mechanism.

Rotary vane compressors

Rotary vane compressors serve in a variety of welding operations, in the use of air-operated metal and wood working tools, in cylinders used in paper pressing, in many industrial cooling operations, throughout material handling operations, in printing pumps and equipment, and much more.

Scroll compressors.

A scroll compressor is a specially designed compressor that works in a circular motion, as opposed to up-and-down piston action.

Diaphragm compressors.

A diaphragm compressor is a variant of the classic reciprocating compressor with backup and piston rings and rod seal.

2.Safety when using an air compressor. Dangers and hazards , preventive action and servicing.

  • Use gas air compressors outdoor

  • Wear safety goggles and gloves

  • Wear safety glasses

  • Check for oil and air leaks

  • Use a self-retracting cord

3.PPE when using air tools - general

Wear safety glasses or goggles, or a face shield

4.Different types of air tool connections /tools

Industrial interchange

Automotive interchange

ARO interchange

5.Specific safety when using

Impact driver - Tie long hair back or secure under a cap.

Air ratchet - Always wear safety glasses with side protectors when using an impact wrench. Never wear a tie, loose clothing, a watch, rings, or jewelry when using an air-impact wrench. wrench. Only use impact wrench sockets that are specifically designed for this type of tool.

PPE blog

Personal Protective Equipment.
What is PPE?
Personal Protective Equipment is protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other
garments or equipment designed to protect the wearer's body from injury or infection.
The hazards addressed by protective equipment include physical, electrical, heat,
chemicals, biohazards, and airborne particulate matter.
What are the basic requirements for PPE here at the HHS workshop?
include items such as gloves, safety glasses and shoes, earplugs or muffs, hard hats,
respirators, or coveralls, vests and full body suits.
Here is a photo of me in basic PPE Include a photo if you like.
What isn’t PPE? you can use this link to help https://www.shponline.co.uk/ppe-personal-protective-equipment/
1. Ordinary working clothes or uniforms not designed to provide for the health or safety of workers;
2. Clothing provided for food hygiene purposes
3. Equipment used for protection while travelling on a public road
(ie motorcycle or bicycle helmets);
4. Equipment used during competitive sport competitions
(but other protective equipment used by sports instructors would
be included eg life jacket worn by canoe instructor)
5. An offensive weapon used as self-defence or as deterrent equipment.
For example, truncheons or CS gas canisters as used by the police or military
(but helmets, body armour and other PPE used to protect staff from physical
violence, is included)
6. Portable devices for detecting and signalling risks and nuisances, such as
badges for detecting radiation, or personal gas detectors.
Who pays for your PPE?
The business must pay for the cost of PPE (unless you are choosing to provide
your own). The business cannot pass on the cost (in full or part) for providing
you with PPE.
Explain the different types/range  of basic PPE that is available in the workplace.
Face shield is aimed to shield the wearer's full face from risks such flying items
and road debris, chemical splashes, and possibly contagious materials.
Gloves keep covering for the hand for protection against dirt, and also having
distinct sections for each finger and thumb
Shoes keep to provide protection falling
Ear muffs are one of a pair of ear coverings connected by a flexible band and
worn as protection against cold or noises.

Power Safety Tool worksheet - Drill Makita DP 1410

Power  Safety Tool worksheet - Drill Makita DP 1410

General -

List safety points for your work area

1 do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of

flammable liquids, gas. The sparks can cause the explosion.

2 Keep a work area and well lit. Cluttered or Dark areas invite accidents.

3 keep the children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distraction can

cause you to lose control.

List 4 electrical safety points when using a mains powered drill

1 Don’t use near water. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.

2 Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use

any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching

outlets will reduce the risk of electric shock.

3  Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or

grounded.

4 When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use.

Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.

5 Do not use portable cord-and-plug connected power tools if the guards are removed.

List 4 personal safety points when using a mains powered drill

1 Use personal protective equipment. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid

safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce

personal injuries.

2 Using the right tools.

Always use the right tools for the job.

  • Never use a tool for a different purpose than it was intended.

  • You risk damaging the tools and injuring yourself.

3 Dress properly. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.

4 Be aware of your surroundings. Always be aware of the people around you when using tools.

5 Protect your eyes. If you don’t use glasses your eye hurts.

List 5 points for safe use and care of the tool

1 keep the cutting tool sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp

cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.

2 Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits. Use of the power tool for operations

different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

3 Do not use the power tools if the tools switch does not turn it on and off.

Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be

repaired.

4 Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool

before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.

Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.

5 Maintain power tools. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.

6 Do not force the power tool. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the

rate for which it was designed.

7 Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar

with the power tools or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are

dangerous in the hands of untrained users.

List 2 servicing points

1 Follow the instructions. After using a tool, clean it and return it to its a proper storage place.

2 Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and grease.

List as many specific safety rules regarding using the drill

1 Hold the tool firmly.

2 remove the chips with a brush, never by hand.

3 Wear safety eye glasses while drilling.

4 Keep hands away from rotating parts.

5 Don’t drill with too much pressure.

6 Use auxiliary handle.

7 Do not touch the drill bit

What PPE is required with this drill

Safety glasses or face shield.

Hazard Identification & Action

A hazard can be described as anything that could cause you and others any form of harm.

A hazard that can cause you serious harm is described as significant.

Once a significant hazard has been determined the school must take “all practical steps” to eliminate, isolate or minimize the significant hazard.

Safety Signage

Here are some examples : Identify the sign, Describe what it means ,Explain what action you would take

Approaching the hazard, a place to stop, and clean up the mess.
