Reflection section

Title type: Romeo and Juliet

Title text :

Title creator: Williams Shakespeare

In class we have been reading Shakespeare's book on Romeo and Juliet we finish act 1.

In act 1 Romeo can’t sleep because he loves a woman but he’s not interested in loving anyone so he feels anger and silence that he doesn’t want to talk to anyone about it. The attendant is told to give the guest the problem so that he cannot read immediately ask anyone to help him show Montagues to the capulets party and after Tybalt’s fight wan his arrival reminds him of what he said Prince Escalus and when the Montagues and the capulets fight another fight to cut off their heads.

what does the author of this text want us to know?

how people expect love to be versus how it actually is.

the lord of the ring: the followship of the rings

 Brainstorm:

4 hobbits are hiding under a tree from the black rider. they are afraid to see on their faces.

technique- colour - palette - green,black,grey,dark,nature/ natural,dull

- feels cold + uninviting.

lightning- natural, dim, cold- makes it feel cold + uninviting.

sounds- diegetic sounds- horses hooves approaching, bugs crawling, birds movements of rider armour, sounds of his breathing, -little sounds are magnified when we are afraid.

camera: shots- focus - movements-angles

-tilt shot - from the rider to the hiding hobbits, close -ups-hobbits faces -scared nervous

- bugs - crawling across the hobbits, show how difficult it was to keep still + quiet.

- three close-ups on parts of the rider-the horses hooves pawing the grounds, the horses muzzle / bridal with red-eye, and the rider's feet hitting the grounds. builds suspense before we see the rider.

low angle- looking up the rider, show hobbits cowering below, makes the rider look bigger, intimidating and frightening.

Statement- In thee 'Black Rider' scene close-up are used to show the fears of the characters as they hide.

Example- the four hobbits are running from the Black Rider. They seek refuge in under the roots of an old tree as the rider approaches. close-ups shows us the expression of fear on the hobbits faces.

X- Audience- this makes the audience feel intimidated and anxious with the hobbits as the unseen enemy approaches.

X- director- the purpose of this is to build suspense before we see the rider. like the characters, we are afraid even though we don't what is coming.

X-link technique- Combined with close-ups is the use of diegetic sounds including the horses hooves on the grounds, the breathing of the rider, and clinking of his armour as he dismounted. these sounds add to the feeling of fear we have seen through the close-ups shots.

y- your real world connections- interestingly, most viewers have felt the fear of being chased and found before. this allows them to connect with the emotions of the characters in these moments.

Zoopinia

 Brainstorm:

-A fox wants to buys a jumbo pop from the elephants store but they won't sell it to them.

-The bunny officers step in to help.

technique- colour - bright -hearting scene, aimed at children so is colorful + engaging

lightning - warm, natural, bright,-daytimes, hot-sunny day, fox/ bunny spotlighting

Camera-

 (shots/angles)

(focus/movement)

The elephant is taller, feels bigger, superior, we aren't meant to like the elephant because he wants to serve them-rough angry tone, low angles from fox POV +high angle down onto fox makes him look small.

Statement- in the 'popsical' scene, low angles shot are used to show the imbalance of power between characters.

Evidence - we see this when the elephant is talking to the fox. the low angles shot used to show how much bigger and more imposing the elephant is than the fox.

X-audience- this makes the audience feel sad for the fox because he is being refused service because of his size.

X-director- the purpose of this is to introduce the idea of stereotyping to the viewer. appearing large and rough, the elephant shopkeeper refuse service because he is a fox. strengthening this idea the elephant's quote 'go back your side of town'.

X- other techniques- combined with the use of high angle shots, we see the differences in the characters, rather than the similarities. the high angle point of view makes the fox seem even smaller than the elephants towering over him.

Y- realworld link- issue like this where people are jumped on their size, race, or religion are not isolated to this film. in the real world, we tackle ongoing issues of discrimination in every country, even in 2021.

Avatar film

Brainstorm

The two were talking. she told him to go away because he didn't belong.

The seeds of the sacred tree choose him.

techniques;

lightning  artifial, bright & dim - plants/ things they touched were bright, backgrounds was dim, cold

colour- pallette-neon-blue/green/purple

-extreme, show us we are some place different/exciting.

camera- tilt shot used to show the seeds -> POV shot of jake, exciting/magical

-shot-angle

-movements-focus - conversation- mid-shot, show bodies-shows the distance between the characters.

- close-up on seeds shows etheral movements, other worldly.

statement: in the scene 'seeds of the sacred tree' lightning is effectively used to create the other worldly experience of pandora.

evidence: artificial bright light is seen as the figures run and touch things in the environment. the rest of their surroundings remain dark against these flashes of cold neon light.

X-audience- this makes the audience feel amazed and envious of the unnatural and unearthly qualities of the planet.

X-director- the director did this to make the viewer feel like they have been transported to another world where new and exciting things are possible.

X-other techniques- coinciding with this is the use of a neon colour palette. the blues, , greens and purples become vibrant and otherworldly when combined with the artificially bright lights cursed by movements.

Y-your link- the lightning and colour are just a passed to that which we experience in the real world. like earth, it has trees, plants, and native people but they seen vastly different from us because of the bright artificial neon lighting and colours.

Theme/idea- the idea the story centers around.

-message we are trying to convey to the audience.

Tolerance - the quality of allowing people to have their own attitudes, beliefs, or to believe in a particular way, even if you don’t agree or approve.

Overcoming adversity - pushing past/getting through something difficult or dangerous.

The holocaust scene - 27:25-36:53

Overcoming adversity

  • The students don’t respect or have a relationship with their teacher. They don’t understand each other.

  • Drew a racist picture of Jamal

  • The students yell at the teachers, face different directions, tell her don’t give her respect

  • Andre- why should I give you my respect you? Because you’re a teacher? I don’t know you’re not a liar standing up there.

  • They aren’t in a headspace to learn because they don’t feel safe-bring guns to school, mock each other, no tolerance for each other.

  • Marcus- lady, I’m lucky if I make it to 18, we in a war! We graduating every day we live because we ain’t afraid to die protecting our own.

Deep focus- everything in the is sharp clear
shallow focus- focuses us on part of an image blurs the rest
- tells the viewers where attention is needed.

In the holocaust scene, the shallow focus is used to slow the theme of tolerance. For instance, we see a picture being passed around the room until it reaches Jamel. The picture is a stereotype t an African American with big lips and has Jamal’s name on As, he receives it, Jamal puts his hat black and shrinks into his chair. shallow focus is used to brings out attention to the picture and its effect on Jamal. This makes us understood that the picture was used to bully and embrass Jamal. The director did this to help us empathize with the characters and gain an insight into what their lives are like. Coinciding with this is the use of costume-in this case Jamal’s hat. When Jamal puts the hats on, it symbolises that he wants to hide away and not be seen. This scene introduces the viewer to the theme of tolerance because we can see that currently, the students do not respect each other’s cultures, beliefs, or identities. This makes students like Jamal’s feel unsafe in class.

Angles-high /low-shows power/dominance

Lightning -dim/bright-show emotions e.g Jamal overwhelmed

Close up/mid shot- teacher in midshot

Students close up

We feel the distance between the students the teacher, gap in misunderstanding.

Close-up-students, the director wants us to empathise, with them, see it from their perspective

Mid shot- on teacher-shows the divide between them.

Shallow focus

Props

Dialogue

Close-up          EVA

Shallow focus

In the holocaust scene, the close-up is used to slow the theme of emotion for the students. For instance, Eva was shouting at the teacher because she “hated the white skin”. Eva was angry for saying the teacher she

  • He feels at home at school in ms gruwels class

  • Overcoming adversity - he has come to school despite being evicted

Music- slow, soft, sad

Camera -close up-from close -shows the audience his emotion

shot/movements/angles/focus Dollyshot -from close - up  to mid-back to close -up -shows viewer

That student is surrounded, supported by his classroom family.

Shallow focus - the speaker is sharp, those around are blurred to make him the focus, most important.

Dialogue, tone of speech, body language

In the “I am home ‘scene shallow focus is used to show how these characters overcame adversity.

Brainstorm

Miep gies has come to talk to the class about hiding Anne franks her family

Marcus stands and tells her that shes his hero.

Miep says that they are her heroes.

Camera      - pan shot - used to slow all of students are there and they are all

shot/angle      focused listening-not distracted like previous scenes.

Movement/focus

Lighting - bright, cold , natural- back lit- creates a halo effect making her seem angelic or god-like. This works because the students see miep like a god because she saved te franks.
